j about us
The University of California, San Diego Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (UCSD AUVSI) Team consists of engineering students from the Jacobs School of Engineering. The mission is to raise interest and give students experience with unmanned technology.
Currently the team is involved with the annual AUVSI UAV Student Competition which is held mid-June every year at Webster's Field in Maryland.
It calls for a vehicle capable of autonomous flight to navigate to specified locations and to utilize an array of onboard payload sensors to
locate and assess a series of man-made objects prior to returning to the launch point for landing. The UCSD team's first entry (June 2006) into the
AUVSI UAV Challenge yielded a very respectable 5th place overall finish. The vehicle must also be in compliance with a set of rules
(found here).
For further details of the competition please visit the official site (found here).

j current platform
Aircraft
The aircraft used for the team is the RnR-APV-3. This aircraft was designed for accommodating a large payload (roughly 30lbs) while being able to handle stably in windy conditions.
Payload
Integrated into this large aircraft is a powerful and very scalable Windows Based PC. By selecting a single board computer powered by an Intel Pentium M, target recognition and processing can be done in flight by the onboard computer.
Autopilot
We are currently using a Crossbow uNav autopilot.
Advantages include a fully open-source architecture that allows the team
to modify the systems as necessary for successful mission completion as
well as a very small footprint.
